————————————————

Australia burns.

Six people are dead already, animals incinerated in their thousands, more than a thousand homes gone and more than two million hectares of bush habitat up in smoke. Smoke haze is the new normal. And it’s only December.

It’s time to do something about it. At 8 am this Friday the 13th of December in Kurilpa Point Park, South Brisbane, we’re going to take action. And so can you. There will also be green (non-arrestable) spaces for spectators.

Scientists, First Nations people and firefighters all agree that without drastic action on climate change the fires are only going to come even earlier and burn even bigger.

What is our government doing about it?

They’re locking up peaceful climate protestors without trial. They’re signing off on new coal mines as the country burns around us.

And they’re talking about the cricket.

“Going to be a great summer of cricket, and for our firefighters and fire-impacted communities, I’m sure our boys will give them something to cheer for.” — Prime Minister Scott Morrison, after the sixth bushfire-related death this year.

If our politicians want cricket, we’ll give it to them.

This Friday the 13th of December, we’re taking non-violent direct action. We’re going to take a space and peacefully disrupt business as usual with a sarcastic game of cricket, music, dancing, singing, and protest. This is called civil disobedience. It is a non-violent form of protest and we have the right to do it.

Where will all of this happen? It could be in Kurilpa Park or it could be somewhere even more disruptive. We’ll decide that together on the day.

We acknowledge that this action will be taking place on the stolen land of the Jagera, Turrbal, Yuggera and Yugarabul peoples of Meanjin/Brisbane and surrounds. First Nations people have been fighting for 231 years to protect country, water, culture and life, and we’re only now joining the struggle against systems of exploitation.

Everyone’s welcome (no cricket skills required)—come to Kurilpa Point Park this Friday at 8 am, and let’s take action against inaction.

Step up.
Take action.
Stop the extinction.
