The People’s Blockade of the World’s Biggest Coal Port

This April, take positive action for a safe climate future in one of the largest peaceful direct protests in Australia’s history.
The event will occur on Awabakal land and water, at Muloobinba (Newcastle, NSW).
Grab a kayak, a surfboard, a yacht (or create your own raft!) and join with thousands of others calling for an urgent response to climate change and a just and fair transition for coal industry workers and communities.
It will be a fun and family-friendly day celebrating our awe-inspiring planet earth, all its brilliant wildlife and the beauty of humanity. A day to celebrate all that’s currently at stake.
It will be a moment to embrace the clean energy of the future, such as solar, wind, waves and battery storage – and to herald an urgent but fair transition away from coal.
For decades, climate science has warned that fossil fuels have to end. Now the climate crisis is here and there is still no plan to support coal industry workers through the coming transition.
Let’s demand a plan to guide a managed decline of the Hunter Valley coal industry.
We must plan now for a just transition to clean energy jobs. And we must act swiftly to have a chance to leave a safe planet for our children.
Why join this protest?
The climate crisis is here. If we do not take urgent action, the future for today’s youth and children will be unthinkable.
Newcastle exports more coal than any other port in the world – around 160 million tonnes each year. That’s nearly equal our entire domestic emissions. That is, Newcastle exports the same emissions equivalent as nearly every Australian household, vehicle and industry combined.
This climate impact is happening now; every day, every year. Exported from Newcastle, delivered to the world and back at us, as fires, drought, heatwaves, floods, storms, rising seas, animal extinctions and coral death. We have a responsibility to say this is not okay!
Come along to help build the power of the people to stand up to the big polluters. We’re part of a growing global movement for climate justice. Everyone is invited. Everyone is needed.
