Sydney: Bushfire Silent Vigil

An unprecedented bushfire emergency is gripping NSW and Queensland.
The NSW Rural Fire Service said firefighters were in “uncharted territory”.
Currently there are 74 fires burning in NSW, 43 unconfined, three at emergency level.
“It was a storm. It wasn’t a fire, it was a storm. It was a firestorm.”

So far…
At least three people are dead, five are missing, and 40 are injured.
More than 150 homes have been destroyed.
Countless animals have died, old-growth rainforests that haven’t burnt in hundreds of years are destroyed.
More than 1300 firefighters and volunteers continue to battle blazes across the state.

In no honest world can our State and Federal Governments observe these events – this unprecedented destruction of people and homes and land – and keep denying the truth of the Climate Emergency. Gladys, Scott – Tell the Truth!

Extinction Rebellion stand in solidarity with Australians and communities on the frontlines of the Climate Emergency and our emergency services workers and volunteers working round the clock to put out these blazes and support those affected.

This Friday 15 November at 5.30pm, Extinction Rebellion will hold a Silent Vigil at Town Hall in the Sydney CBD.

We will be there in solidarity with the victims of the bushfires, of the communities affected, of the ecosystems annihilated, and of the emergency workers and volunteers on the climate frontlines.
