QLD Is Burning, Sydney Is Choking: Climate Emergency Rally

SNAP BRISBANERALLY
Climate Emergency Rally!
Protest Scott Morrison, Fund our Firies!
Organised by Uni Students for Climate Justice.

The climate crisis is here. Mega fires are raging across NSW and Qld. Inevitably fires will ravage communities in Victoria too this summer. Hundreds of thousands of hectres of pristine forest, including ancient rainforests, have been burnt, over 700 homes destroyed and 6 people have tragically been killed.

Sydney has been choking on smoke for over a week and is likely to continue for the few months. The unprecedented hazardous air quality will cause major health problems over the coming years.

Scott Morrison’s response has been criminal. He says firefighters don’t need our support. The Federal ‘Opposition’ has doubled down in its support for coal exports. Meanwhile, millions have been cut from the state budgets for professional and volunteer fire services by his colleagues in the state Liberal government.

For year after year governments have denied the approaching climate emergency and expanded the fossil fuel industry while cutting funding to fire and other essential services and mismanaging vital river and water systems.

Now the result is here: unprecedented drought, bushfires, and now a massive health crisis, with millions choking, with no escape, and severe consequences for people’s immediate and long term health.

We can’t just sit by while the government and corporations destroy our planet, our communities and our health.

Join this protest in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in NSW and demand:

1. Climate action now!
– No new coal, oil and gas projects, including the Adani mine.
– 100% publicly owned renewable energy generation & exports by 2030
– Fund a just transition & job creation for all fossil-fuel workers & communities.
2. Fund fire services!
– Reverse the funding cuts and increase funding immediately to NSW Fire and Rescue and the RFS. Massively boost funding for Victoria’s fire services.
3. Stand with workers in Sydney and demand:
– All employers required to cease operations immediately in areas where air pollution reaches dangerous levels for workers.
– Special allowances made for additional, paid, sick leave for people suffering from the effects of air pollution.
– All hospitals, aged care facilities, schools and child care centres to be fitted with proper HEPA filters or air conditioning.
– Those particularly vulnerable to respiratory conditions offered government-supplied HEPA air purifiers, or fully funded evacuation to clean areas for the duration of the crisis.
– Publicly funded, free P2 masks.
