Graduation Climate March (Everybody Welcome)

March: Current, past & future graduates and academics will join in a peaceful march, wearing graduation caps (and gowns where possible). Family, friends and supporters will join the march as we support our peers taking this symbolic stand for climate action.

The procession will leave QPAC, cross the Victoria bridge and walk through Queen Street Mall before heading to Parliament where we will toss our academic caps to the sky.

People’s Assembly: Once we get to Parliament, we’ll take a seat in the botanic gardens and hear from academics, students and supporters. We’ll brainstorm together and learn what we can do in our lives and in our sectors for climate justice, now.

—— Why are we doing this? ——

The climate crisis is experienced on a daily basis, across all disciplines.

It is hoped this march will be a defining moment; a representation of a generational shift. This march is an opportunity for emerging professionals to declare they will not sit idle as the climate crisis looms, but will approach their lives with the health of the planet at the forefront of their minds.

We are graduates, academics and citizens – and we refuse to be mindless robots operating within the ‘business as usual’ that is killing our planet. We demand climate action NOW.

Letters in bins, petitions in filing cabinets – it’s time to march on the streets. Let’s make sure everyone understands this crisis is an emergency.

Then, join us as we hear from academics about how the climate crisis is being felt in their discipline, with a focus on positive action.

We acknowledge that the Graduation Climate March will be taking place on the stolen land of the Jagera, Turrbal, Yuggera and Yugarabul peoples of Meanjin / Brisbane and surrounds.
Because the fight to protect ourselves and the environment is new to many people, it is important we acknowledge that First Nations people have already been fighting for over 231 years to protect country, water, culture and life.

—— What to wear / bring ——

Past, current and future graduates (ie. All uni students) – If possible, wear your graduation hat/ gown. We know this could be tricky to organise, so watch this space as we update you with what our arts team will be putting together / or providing instructions on how to make your own graduation cap.

Academics / professionals / XR Doctors – Now is the time to pull out any old graduation / academic attire or your stethoscope etc! Otherwise, come along in whatever you’re comfortable in.

School Students: Feel free to wear free dress or come in your uniform / jerseys.

Friends, family supporters, all rebels: Banners/ signs/ posters & your positive energy.
