The climate crisis is here.
“Once in a century” floods and fires are now a regular occurrence. Thousands have already been displaced or killed by climate disasters.
Despite all the hot air about a green transition, carbon emissions are predicted to reach a record of 37.5 million tonnes. Fossil fuel investment hasn’t died out – it reached an estimated $4 trillion last year.
The fossil fuel companies who have made billions of dollars out of fuelling climate change are entrenched in our universities. Curtin University boasts on their website about business partnerships with Woodside, Chevron and BHP, among others.
Chevron and Woodside in particular are leading climate criminals who are responsible for one-third of WA’s emissions. In the process of destroying the planet, both have undermined indigenous rights; intervened into West Papua and East Timor; and hyper-exploited workers. These corporations have overseen the expansion of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in WA. In every other state, carbon emissions have stagnated or declined since 2005. While in WA, the LNG industry has been responsible for a 23% increase in emissions. This can mostly be sourced to Chevron’s and Woodside’s respective Gorgon and Browse projects.
Woodside plans to further increase emissions through it’s Burrup Hub expansion. Their expanded site would emit 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide throughout its entire operation. That’s 3.8 times more than the Adani coal mine.
Curtin is proud to be a part of this process: they fund it through billions of dollars in research deals, grants and scholarships, and they teach it in courses and departments designed to funnel students into these companies.
Politicians won’t save us. The Albanese government is putting more fuel on the fire by approving 114 new fossil fuel projects, while state governments have responded by criminalising climate protestors.
We need to fight back. Join students around the country in rallying to demand:
1. Shut down the fossil fuel industry – no new fossil fuel projects
2. Tax the rich to fund a just transition to renewables and reparations for victims of climate disasters
3. Stop the expansion of oil and gas drilling – stop Scarborough and Beetaloo basin projects
4. Land rights now – stand with Gomeroi people, stop Santos project in Narrabri
5. Stop the repression of climate protestors
