Pedal Rebels in support of the Koala Day of Action

The Pedal Rebels will be riding from Prince Alfred Park to the Archibald Fountain at Hyde Park Sydney on Sunday March 21, 2021 in support of Cate Faehrmann’s and the Bob Brown Foundation’s Koala Day of Action. For more information on the Koala Day of Action go to the Facebook event https://bit.ly/koala-rally
The Black Summer megafires killed 10,000 koalas and decimated millions of hectares of forests, the loggers and the bulldozers have been let rip in koala habitat across the state. Koalas in NSW could be extinct before 2050 without urgent government action to protect their habitat. So far nothing has been done.
In 2021, koalas need us to be their voice. We need to tell the politicians that we won’t back down until there’s no more clearing of koala habitat – for the timber industry, for new suburbs, for anything.
There is no cost for this event but please select the “Going” and “Ticketing” options so that we can collect your attendance details and work out exactly how many riders we can expect on the day.
We will be meeting at the southern end of Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills, near to the intersection of George and Cleveland Streets at 10:00am, for a safety briefing and mechanical check.
We will set off on a leisurely, but noisy, ride northward through the park, onto Elizabeth Street, then onto Eddy Ave, through Belmore Park, onto Castlereagh, Liverpool and Elizabeth Street arriving at St James Station at Hyde Park in time for the beginning of the action at 10:30-11:00am.
At the conclusion of the action in the park at 12:15 we will take a route to the Opera House through Circular Quay where we can stop for a photo op and to hand out some leaflets. Then through The Rocks to Dawes Point, through Walsh Bay and then meeting up with the main body of the march at Barangaroo at about 1:00pm.
Our setting off point at Prince Alfred Park is five minutes ride from both Central and Redfern stations.
Please bring XR flags, t-shirts or signs you can attach to your bike. There will be some flags provided on the day for riders that don’t have something already. Remember that if you are designing something that the messaging should be about saving and conserving koalas and koala habitat. Feel free to dress thematically.
This is a family and child-friendly event and everyone is welcome, so bring your friends!
This is will be a COVID Safe event and our peloton will be arranged accordingly.
DO NOT BE LATE! Safety briefing begins at 10:00am.
– Ride will maintain physical distancing.
– Safety precautions will be observed.
– We may slow traffic but will not be majorly disruptive.
– We will be loud, colourful and fun.
– Ensure that your bicycle has a bell (we want to make some noise and it is a legal requirement).
WET WEATHER – if the forecast is looking uncertain and skies are turning grey, the main event will still take place and we will still be riding. If you choose not to ride then please still join the protest at the Archibald Fountain at 10:30-11:00am.
If you need to borrow a bike or want to borrow other equipment, flags, etc. or
if you are interested in handing out XR information, direct message XR Inner West.
