Carbon Capture and Storage: Viable Option or The Road to Nowhere (online presentation)

Presenter: James McIlwraith
James has worked as a geologist in the resources sector for more than 35 years in various parts of the world, initially in the oil industry then in ‘hard rock’ mining, exploration and resource evaluation
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), also known as geo-sequestration, has been promoted as a viable option in reducing global carbon emissions for some years. The Federal Government’s proposed Low Emissions Technology Road Map is the latest iteration of vacillating government support for this strategy. Despite the billions of dollars of Australian taxpayer dollars already tipped in so far, there are still no large scale projects successfully up and running in Australia, or for that matter, anywhere else in the world. We need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions immediately. With technology and physical issues still to resolve, is this really a strategy worth pursuing?
