We are calling on the Sunshine Coast Council to Declare &
Act on the Climate Emergency!

A climate emergency is public recognition that gradual responses to global warming are no longer sufficient.

When governments at any level declare a climate emergency and match that declaration with clear and tangible outcomes of emergency action …it becomes both symbolic AND a powerful agent for change.

With both state and national governments failing to stop let alone reverse global warming, we need to make progress where it can be made – at council level.

Councils can get the ball rolling by actively breaking the paralysing ‘bystander effect’ where no government steps into action mode because they are waiting for others to make the first move.

This is demand number one: ‘Tell the Truth’ of the three demands XR has issued globally.

The first, which the climate emergency declaration falls under, is that governments and media need to acknowledge the scale of the climate crisis.

Number two is ‘Act Now’. Governments have to implement policy that represents the science on the issue.

And it has to be policy that moves to net-zero emissions before 2030 at the latest.

The third demand ‘Beyond Politics’ where governments establish local Citizens’ Assemblies to decide on the policies needed to achieve net-zero emissions.
