Join XR Port Phillip on 18/3/2020 at the Canadian Consulate for this protest in solidarity with Canadian First Nations people and XR Canada to halt the construction of a multi-billion dollar gas pipeline across unceded Wet’suwet’en tribal lands in British Colombia without any consent of the tribal chiefs.
Waves of protests have rippled across Canada led by Wet’suwet’en land defenders and indigenous rights activists and joined by allies including XR Canada rebels as armed Royal Canadian Mountain Police have continued to brutally arrest protesters, tear down camps and drive entire peoples from their ancestral lands accompanied by attack dogs and helicopters in a new wave of colonial dispossession.
Mass civil disobedience across Canada has blocked construction sites, city centres, and disrupted freight and passenger trains for almost a month as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nervously continues his 2020 reelection campaign.
In response to the crippling demonstrations oil giant Tek has already cancelled a 20 billion dollar tar sands oil exploration project, but Mr Trudeau’s green-washing government continues to commit over 1 billion dollars in subsidies to allow this criminal fossil fuel extraction project to continue, clearly violating Trudeau’s commitment to reducing Canada’s carbon footprint.
We will channel our anger at the mistreatment of our Canadian brothers and sisters into a peaceful mass demonstration outside the consulate in Melbourne with a sea of fierce love, creative art and performance surprises, and inspiring banners and music accompanied by a social media project to beam our support over to our friends fighting to save the planet in Canada and around the globe.
As always, this is a peaceful action. Some people may engage in an act of civil disobedience but this is not required of all attendees and participation in this portion of the event requires advanced training. There is space for everyone, and families with children are also welcome.
