Summer is normally a time for Australians to get together, watch cricket, enjoy the tennis and play at the beach. This summer we’ve already seen the cricket cancelled because of smoke haze and our beaches used for desperate fire evacuees. Scientists are telling us it won’t be long before play on centre court at the Australian Open will become impossible at this time of year.
Join us on the unceded lands of the Kulin Nation by the Yarra to show our outrage and express our grief at what is happening to our beautiful country.
We will hold a silent vigil, while holding signs that express how we feel about the fires and the climate emergency. Please wear your professional clothes or work uniforms to show the cross-section of society that we represent. Black armbands will be provided. There will also be a mourning area with a condolence book that participants and passers by can sign, which will be delivered to State parliament.
This event is 100% non-disruptive. We recognise that now is not the time to stretch emergency services further than they have been.
