The climate crisis is here. Mega fires are raging across NSW and Qld, over 700 homes destroyed and 6 people have tragically been killed. Smoke from the fires has blown across the ACT, and this will likely repeat over the summer. The unprecedented hazardous air quality will cause major health problems over the coming years.
Scott Morrison’s response has been criminal. He says firefighters don’t need our support. The Federal ‘Opposition’ has doubled down in its support for coal exports. Meanwhile, millions have been cut from the state budgets for professional and volunteer fire services by his colleagues in the NSW state Liberal government.
For year after year governments have denied the approaching climate emergency and expanded the fossil fuel industry while cutting funding to fire and other essential services and mismanaging vital river and water systems. The result is here: unprecedented drought, bushfires, and now a massive health crisis, with millions choking on smoke.
